Teardrop Explodes - Kilimanjaro (1980)

Live in solitude like Howard Hughes...
Brace yourself for horns galore. They were very big in the eighties, did you not know? As corny as they can be I have no issue with them being on this album. I think Julian Cope was super cool back in the day. Not sure what drugs he was on but he was certainly a weird dude. Hailing all the way from Wales! Of course this works out to be a benefit ;) This is The Teardrop Explodes debut album that was released in 1980. I always thought he had a unique presentation, vocally. And his lyrics are pretty clever as well.
"The original working title for Kilimanjaro was Everyone Wants To Shag The Teardrop Explodes (this was later used for the CD release of demos for the band's never-finished third album)." - WikiPedia
Which is a great album btw! I may post that one at a later time but for now I'll leave you with this amazing gem. Also an interesting fact, while in college, Julian Cope played in a band with
Ian McCulloch who later went on to form Echo and the Bunnymen. I can sort of see the relationship between the two bands through this album. It's magical, unique, and Julian Cope proves to be a real talent. Super catchy, dancey at times, but dark. Highly recommended intro to this phenomenal short lived group.

  1. Love this record. I just wrote a feature on the origins of The Teardrop Explodes band name if you'd like to take a look - http://thequietus.com/articles/09596-the-teardrop-explodes . I got to talk to everyone involved (except Cope, unfortunately), even Gerry Conway, who wrote the Daredevil issue they found the name in.
