Martin Dupont - Sleep is a Luxury (2009)

Cold Wave will never be lost & late!

Nearly a year ago I posted Martin Dupont's album, Hot Paradox. Which is outstanding btw. But this is my initial introduction to the French cold wave pioneers. This album was released as a CD in 2009 by the French label, Infrastition. The original vinyl contained only six tracks and that was released in 1985. One day I will get my hands on it as it isn't that pricey on the discogs website. In the meantime I purchased the CD while back and all fourteen tracks are new wave synth perfection! If you're a fan of Andy Partridge, Family Fodder, Post-Punk music give this a go! I'd also recommend their other album
as well, Hot Paradox, if you dig this. Click here to get Hot Paradox.

Family Fodder - Monkey Banana Kitchen (1980)

...with a Ba-naNA...

Here is the second album by Family Fodder, Monkey Banana Kitchen. It was released in 1980 on Fresh Records. Prior to this album I only had the best of which is also available HERE. It blew me away and I've been eager to here an actual album since then. Family Fodder blends new wave humor and post punk spasms. With it's French English fusion, it is without a doubt a very entertaining album that will charm listeners! ;)

Martin Dupont - Hot Paradox (1987)

French New Wave. Eat your heart out, Godard!

Cult French New Wave heroes, Martin Dupont released this darling, Hot Paradox, in 1987. It was released by the French label, Infrastition, and to this very day still manages to sound new and invigorating. Containing loud synth sounds that etch new wave stigma, yet also carries into pre-industrial synth, it is understandable why this may be classified as cold wave. Extremely danceable, and fun to listen to on a train ride through industrial infrastructures or perhaps on a beautiful spring morning while the rain pours down. Listening to this album, vocally, at times reminded me of The Knife. So it definitely has that new wave zeal that gets you moving but also contains darker elements as well -hence this cold wave term.

Track Listing:
1. Full Moons and Mouths
2. Hot Paradox
3. My Analyst Assez
4. Pressure
5. Berlin Wall
6. He Saw the Light
7. Inside Out
8. I Never Tried
9. Where to Find it
10. Like A Lion

Family Fodder

Savoir Faire! Loving the outfit on the far right! Need to replicate it quicksmart!

I always adored new wave music for it's quirkiness and catchy upbeat rhythms. If I need to recover from a sour day, I just need headphones and a music player, and probably dancing space. My mind tends to wander into other dimensions when I go on a listening spree. Family Fodder is a group that emerged from the new wave scene - they are eccentric and at times can be difficult to swallow. But if you go into it with an open mind you'll enjoy their bizarro humorous tracks as much as their ridiculously catchy gems, such as Film Music, Savoir Faire, Deborah Harry, and a personal favorite Cold Wars. For me, their lyrics are to be taken with a grain of salt. They're just a fun new wave band that is a joy to listen to.

"Family Fodder was less a band than a never-ending
collective of musicians messing with tapes in the
basement of a London flat. Begun in 1979 by Alig
Pearce, a label called Small Wonder released
their first 7" when they still went by the name
Te Deum." - (Daphne Carr Allmusic.com)

Unaware of the band's original whereabouts, they seem to blend a fine mixture of whimsical London traits and eccentric French characteristics. The album I'm leaving you with is a greatest hits compilation. I believe it captures all their gems and it's a great introduction to the group. You might be surprised by the songs you already know! Here's a preview track, Film Music. Enjoy!
