The The - Soul Mining (1981)

i'm choking to death in a sun that never sets...

The The's second album released in 1981. It's one of the best lyrical pieces of the 80's along with his other album, Infected. I like to think of this album as the simpler The The album. Matt Johnson's signature approach to songs is built on climatic turns. Most The The songs build up to something completely different then how it began. This is one of my favorite albums of all time, along with Infected. I say this one is simpler because although there's many sounds emerging, the base tune that I always find myself humming is the synth keys that are so pleasant and genius all at the same time! This album has to contain some of the best lyrical gems I've ever heard on any album. It's so easy to keep praising this work. The overall feeling this album evokes as a whole is jovial and turns your darkest days into lush, vibrant manifestations. From the glowing art work (that I adore on all their albums) to the sweet rhytms of the music and Matt Johnson's storytelling, narrative song approach. This is the day doesn't even come close to being the best on this album. But it is a DAMN GOOD SONG. Some faves: Giant, Uncertain Smile (remarkable piano solo), Soul Mining, The Sinking Feeling...
