Eyeless in Gaza - Rust Red September (1983)

My second Eyeless in Gaza post. Don't worry, I have plenty of new artists still to share, but I was listening to this album and thought it'd be important to post. The first time I heard Eyeless in Gaza was off the Pillows & Prayers Cherry Red comp. few years back. I was completely smitten by Martyn Bates lyrical screeching and howling - it was incredible how something so strange could be so beautiful. This is probably their best album (imo), and one of the most beautiful albums of the 80s, musically, lyrically & vocally. I still hold Martyn Bates' vocal style on a pedestal. He has such a unique approach to singing and it blends so well with the music. It's a perfect compromise of blabbering noise and a hybrid of English guitar sounds and fragile synths. Cherry Red is such a unique label - I highly recommend the Pillows & Prayers Comp I posted back last year. It's a phenomenal introduction to a profound sound in the independent music scene that swept England throughout the 80s.
